How do Trans People Win?

To be honest, it feels like our world is either going to hell or already there. Make no mistake, these are hard times. Whether it is trying to legislate trans people out of existence in Florida, banning gender-affirming care for minors in Ohio, or the grim response to the murder of Brianna Ghey in the UK, the situation seems overwhelming and all-consuming. The entire LGBTQ+ community is at risk, but it is trans people who are being deliberately and maliciously hit by the tip of the conservative, anti-queer spear. We both know that is killing us, too. It is definitely killing me.

It shouldn’t be this way, should it?

I am beyond fed up with being a conservative punchbag for all the ills in the world. I categorically reject being popularized as a threat to children, sports, society, and god knows what else. I object to the dehumanizing language used to describe people like us, and I deplore the outright hatred propagated by the media, on social media, and by the government both national and domestic.

It is unacceptable.

The situation is so severe in the United States and the United Kingdom that I believe we are on the verge of a generational rubicon, if we haven’t already. I am scared, and I know you are too. It is going to get worse before it gets better — probably much worse — and we need to be prepared for that.
